Why Remote Mine Sites Need Local NAS and Server Storage

Cloud-first does not mean cloud-only. Large mining datasets often belong on site, close to the people who create them.

The data problem

Geology, survey and engineering teams create large files: block models, point clouds, high-resolution drone imagery and video. Opening a multi-gigabyte file from a cloud drive over a satellite link can take longer than the task itself.

Local first, replicated second

A site NAS provides fast access for local users, with scheduled replication to head office or the cloud during quieter periods. Users get local performance; the business still gets a central copy.

RAID is not a backup

RAID protects against a single drive failure. It does not protect against deletion, corruption, ransomware or loss of the whole device. Combine snapshots, local backup and off-site copies.

Sizing and environment

Estimate capacity from current data volumes, growth and retention requirements, then add headroom. Install storage in a suitable environment with power protection, cooling and dust control.
